Heikki Laitinen at 75
Folk music and world music
Heikki Laitinen, Emeritus Professor of Folk Music at the Sibelius Academy, composer, musician, poet, stage actor, performance artist and voice improviser, turns 75!
Hosting his birthday concert is Trio Kelavala, a truly unique performing ensemble founded by Laitinen, Reijo Kela and Kimmo Pohjonen nearly 30 years ago. Kelavala creates hundreds of always different performances through improvised music and dance, with durations varying from a few minutes to 12 hours.
This concert also includes sounds and images from across the decades: extracts from experimental operas and instrument theatre, sounds from the Stone Age and from the next millennium, runo singing and Väinämöinen’s music. “Archaic is avant-garde” and “improvisation is pedagogically vital for discovering a musician’s own musical resources,” says Laitinen.
