Antonin Dvořák: Cello Concerto / Richard Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra

Richard Strauss based his massive orchestral poem on the book by Friedrich Nietzsche, and it has since been used to boost the ego at Elvis concerts and to symbolise enlightenment in the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Antonin Dvořák composed his cello concerto around the same time, and it has since earned a place among the most popular pieces of classical music in the world. Gautier Capucon’s interpretation has been described as hypnotic.Juraj ValcuhaJuraj Valcuha has been appointed Music Director of the Teatro di San Carlo, Naples with effect from October 2016. He is also First guest conductor of the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin. He was Chief Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, Turin (2009–16).Juraj Valcuha studied composition and conducting in Bratislava, St Petersburg with Ilya Musin and in Paris. 2005 saw his début with the Orchestre National de France. In the following seasons he has led the Philharmonia, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Swedish Radio, Dresden Staatskapelle, Munich Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Maggio Musicale Florence, Santa Cecilia Rome and Filarmonica della Scala Milan orchestras. North American débuts include the Pittsburgh, Boston, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Montreal Symphonies, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony, Washington DC and New York Philharmonic orchestras. Touring with Orchestra della Rai took them all over Europe as well as to the Abu Dhabi Classics, Musikverein in Vienna and Philharmonie in Berlin.2015/16 marked his return to the New York Philharmonic in New York as well as at the Vail Colorodo Festival, to the Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Minnesota Symphonies, the Munich and Czech Philharmonics. In 2016/17 he made his début with the Chicago Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra, and returned to San Francisco, Montréal, Minnesota as well as Orchestre de Paris. On the Opera, he recently conducted Faust in Florence, Peter Grimes in Bologna as well as Elektra, Carmen and The Girl of the Golden West at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli. His engagements in 2017/2018 bring him back to the American orchestras of San Francisco, Detroit, Cincinnati, Minnesota and Toronto. He will join the Konzerthaus Berlin, Munich Philharmonic, Philharmonia London, Swedish Radio and NDR Elbphilharmonie orchestras, as well as the Rai Orchestra in Torino and the Santa Cecilia in Rome. At his Teatro San Carlo Naples he will conduct productions of Bartok Bluebeard, Shostakovich Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Verdi Don Carlo.Gautier Capuçon “Phenomenally talented” and “hypnotic” are just two of the many expressions used to describe Gautier Capuçon (b. 1981). Already the winner of many prestigious prizes, he was awarded the Victoires de la Musique prize as New Talent of the Year in 2001. He has been one of the brightest stars on the cello firmament for over a decade now, returning again and again to perform with the likes of the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Chicago Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. He last visited the HPO in 2012. His partners in chamber music include Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Leonidas Kavakos and his older brother Renaud.Despite having a considerable discography to his name, Capuçon prefers to record in concert. “Music is alive,” he says, “so we are showing music…When you are in a room with just a few people and a lot of microphones, it is hard to pretend that it really is. When you have an audience, things change considerably.”Gautier Capuçon plays a Matteo Goffriller cello from 1701. Follow him on Twitter @GautierCapucon.
