The renowned British pianist Joseph Tong performs a selection of Sibelius works from his new CD on the Quartz label.

The renowned British pianist Joseph Tong performs a selection of Sibelius works from his new CD on the Quartz label, including the composer's own transcription of Finlandia. The recital also features a captivating new work by the young Finnish composer Juha T. Koskinen.

Sibelius composed over 150 piano pieces and Joseph Tong's programme amply demonstrates the variety of styles and depth of expression he achieved in writing for the instrument throughout his active creative life. The refined lyricism of Sibelius's shorter pieces such as The Trees Op. 75, Flowers Op. 85, Romantic Pieces and the late Esquisses (1929) provide a striking contrast with the powerfully dramatic Kyllikki (1904) and breathtaking piano transcription of Finlandia. Sibelius's ear for piano sonority is evident in masterpieces of the miniature genre such as the exquisite Romantic Pieces and harmonically daring 'Esquisses', the final solo piano pieces Sibelius composed. Also notable in a stylistic sense are the Two Rondinos, the full-blooded virtuosity of Kyllikki Op. 41 and the remarkably concise Sonatina Op 67 no 1, a favourite of John Ogdon and Glenn Gould.

Joseph Tong studied at Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music in London, making his Wigmore Hall debut in 1997 as a winner of the Maisie Lewis Young Artists Award. In May this year he gave an all-Sibelius recital at St John's, Smith Square in London and a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3, performing several pieces from his new Sibelius disc and being interviewed about the composer's piano music. Joseph has also contributed an article on Sibelius to International Piano Magazine. In addition to regular concerts throughout the UK, Joseph Tong has performed in Germany, Portugal (for the British Council), Spain, Japan, USA, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. During his visit to Finland he will also be giving recitals of Sibelius at Ainola and in Hameenlinna. Other forthcoming engagements include St George's Bristol, the Jacqueline du Pre Hall in Oxford and Hatchlands in Surrey.

A longstanding and highly successful piano duo with the Japanese pianist Waka Hasegawa (Piano 4 Hands) has led to broadcasts for BBC Radio 3, WFMT Radio in the USA and concerts at major venues such as Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room at the South Bank, Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and St David’s Hall Cardiff and festivals including Buxton, Cheltenham and Bury St Edmunds. They have also made a series of critically acclaimed CD recordings of Debussy, Schubert and John McCabe and commissioned new works by composers including Dai Fujikura, Edwin Roxburgh and Nicola LeFanu.

Joseph Tong is founder and Co-Director of the Bristol International Piano Duo Festival, held biennially at St George's Bristol
