The evening belongs to Bartók. A critique of materialism from a century ago, “The Wooden Prince” was created during the First World War and as the last resort of the composer who had already given up hopes of a professional career. Nevertheless, the marriage of a fairy-tale love story to music finally sealed Bartók’s reputation and formed the foundation for his later works. His light and almost neoclassical piano concerto is interpreted this evening by the multitalented Jeremy Denk, who has been deservedly described as a genius.
