Sarmanto, Sibelius and Salonen in the RSO’s gala Independence Day concert.

Heikki Sarmanto’s symphonic jazz poem Suomi is “a declaration of love to the fatherland from whose powerful embrace we draw our strength”. This almost National-Romantic cavalcade of images of forests, clear waters, waving corn and the wide-open sky of the Ostrobothnian plains is sure to melt even the hardest of hearts. The same vast heavenly vaults span Pohjola’s Daughter, Sibelius’s counterpart to the imposing orchestral poems of Richard Strauss, this time drawing on the national epic, The Kalevala.
