Mythical heroes and an order to seize the day at this gala Independence Day concert.
The concert celebrating Finland’s Independence Day presents works inspired by mythical heroes: Sibelius’s Lemminkäinen Legends and Madetoja’s romantic tone poem Kullervo, both portraits of characters in the Finnish national epic, Kalevala. Jouni Kaipainen’s concerto Carpe diem! composed for clarinet wizard Kari Kriikku in 1990 is still as topical as ever. Independence Day is also a time to look to the future, so acting as our guide will be Klaus Mäkelä, one of the leaders of the new conducting generation.
