Harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani is the soloist in Poulenc’s refined concerto.
Tehran-born Mahan Esfahani has decided to reinstate his instrument in the concert mainstream. Listeners may well imagine they are hearing Hungarian folk tunes in the Bartók dance suites, but they are in fact Bartók’s own. Dvořák was mulling over his attitude to international acclaim, and also his responsibility to his homeland, when he wrote his unusually dark-hued symphony.
